Bowled Over.

I’m pretty sure I’ve repeatedly mentioned how much more STUFF we’ve accumulated since we acquired our newest collection — that would be our babies — and how I’m trying to pare down and streamline our lives a little bit. Haphazardly. Every now and then I’ll see something and think, hmm, I could do without that. This weekend, my eyes landed on my enamel mixing bowl collection.

Like most things, this was an accidental collection. I found the cherry bowl and the red polka-dot bowl (during separate visits) at a thrift store on Broadway in Chicago, in Rogers Park — it was a GREAT thrift store. Affiliated with one of the Catholic churches, it had a huge, wide variety of items and pretty decent prices. Alas, it is gone now.  These bowls caught my eye because 1. I am a freak for mixing bowls, even though I don’t really cook 2. They were red and 3. They either had cherries or polka-dots on them, my two favorite design motifs. I probably bought them over 10 years ago, and paid under $5 for each. In the meantime, the whole Finnish enamel dishes craze happened and they’re pretty collectible — I know the cherry and mushroom bowls are made by Arabia, but I’m not sure about the polka dotted one. I’m going to get them on Etsy this week and see what happens.

I found the mushroom bowl at the Salvation Army in my neighborhood a few weeks back. It always kills me when I find something desirable like this at a thrift store — and it’s what keeps me coming back. In a city this big, with as many bargain hunters as there are here, you can still come across a great find like this one. I paid a little over $3 for it.

Truth be told, I’m sad to be letting go of these. I try to ascribe to the whole “if something isn’t useful or doesn’t make you happy, get rid of it” philosophy — but these do make me happy, every time I see them in their space in the cabinet. I don’t know, though, they’re bowls. At a certain point, you just kind of say to yourself, why do I have this many bowls?

Maybe I’ll put a really high price on them so they won’t sell. 🙂

Chicago finally had some yard sales this weekend — will post a few finds in the next couple of days. Hope yard saling is in full swing in your neck of the woods.
