Everything old is new again.

My Dad is trying to clean out the garage and his storage space, so we ended up with quite a few goodies the last time we visited Little Rock — including a huge gas grill, a router, a drill press, a jigsaw…the list is endless. One of the things I was most excited about was this chair.

Looks a little rough around the edges, huh? That’s because it’s been in our family for eons and has served not only as a chair but as a kitty scratching post as well. Until we got this home, I was sitting in a straight-backed dining room chair at my computer. Not cool. Of course, it looks a bit different now from how it looked when my Dad sat in it.

I had never spray painted a piece of furniture like this before, and I was kind of wary of using that instead of regular paint, but there was NO WAY I was going to paint those spindles. I can NEVER make them look good when I’m using regular paint. So I primed it with Zinsser spray paint (oil-based) and sprayed it with Rustoleum’s Heirloom White. It created a finish that seems practically indestructible — I tried to scratch it with my fingernail and it doesn’t even make a mark. The fabric is from a set of slipcovers from someone’s long-ago patio furniture that I’ve never had the heart to cut up — I probably bought this fabric at a yard sale fifteen years ago — but my niece Taylor helped convince me that I would never find a piece of furniture that would magically fit the slipcover that was custom-made for someone else. It’s a sturdy canvas and I sprayed the heck out of it with Scotchguard.  I still have a ton of it left, which I’m thrilled about, because I love it even more now that I see it in action.

I’m really happy with the way it turned out but the thing that makes me happiest is, despite the radical changes, I can still see my Dad sitting in it, elbows on the arm rests, talking to my Mom after work. Glad that I can keep it in our family.

Shara That is a beautiful chair and an even better story. Glad you could make it your own and still remember the history of it. It looks quite comfy!
