Justin and I finally got the nursery painted last weekend. The hardest part was picking the color. I decided I wanted a light blue — cool and calming. I had no idea how hard it was going to be be to pick a color. Here’s what the room looked like after I had splashed the TWELVE SAMPLE COLORS on the walls.
The kicker is I actually thought I was picking blues that were all in the same family. This gives you an idea of how bad I am with color. The problem is that the light blues were too cold and the darker blues were too overwhelming. At first I was trying out Home Depot brands exclusively (Martha Stewart, Behr, and Glidden) because I had a gift card we were going to use for the paint. It wasn’t until I tried a few Sherwin Williams samples that I found the color we wanted, and I can say with no reservations now that I believe Sherwin Williams paints are superior to the others mentioned above. It was immediately obvious how much better the coverage was just from the samples we were using. I’m not sure you can really tell by the photo, but here’s the cool blue we decided on:
I ADORE it. It’s just the right combination of lightness and warmth.
We were pretty cheerful while painting the walls; it wasn’t until we finished that we realized that the baseboards and the moulding were different colors — the moulding was white and the baseboards off-white. After seriously considering how badly this would bother me — couldn’t I just ignore this discrepancy? — we reluctantly decided we’d better paint the baseboards. I thought we would be okay using Behr this time since it was such a small job, but I hated the Behr Paint plus Primer as soon as we started painting. HATED IT. It’s gummy. So back to Sherwin Williams went Justin and two hours later, we finished painting the baseboards and the hutch/dresser, which was previously a blue that clashed with the new walls:
Ignore the stuff in the glass cabinet — that’s where I’m stashing all of my little knick knacks right now.
So. Wallpaper. I’ve got it in my head that we need to do one wall in wallpaper and now I’m obsessing over it. Here are the candidates:
Who am I fooling? The one on the left is my clear favorite, in all of its rosy, romantic, vintage glory. I’m just afraid it’s too girly, but I’m thinking the blue walls will help offset that. We’re still waiting to hear back about the quote for having someone do it for us. I’ll keep you posted.
So that’s where we are so far!
