Sleeping with the fishes.

Monday was my birthday. I took off of work and my adorable, wonderful, spectacular husband also took the day off. Gaze upon the beauty that is the cake that he made for me.

He made it last night, decorated it, and covered it with tinfoil. When he took the tinfoil off this morning, it lifted the icing words off the cake. Those toothpicks are in the shape of “Happy Birthday,” but he gave up by the time he got to my name and just carved it in.  When he saw me taking pictures of it, he protested — he thought I was going to post photos to make fun of it! Silly, silly boy. It is the sweetest and most beautiful cake I’ve ever gotten.

We went to the Shedd Aquarium. I love it. I’ll never forget the first time we visited: it wasn’t very crowded, and we were able to spend a lot of time right in front of the underwater tank where the Beluga whales were. They swam right up to us and floated there, staring at us. It was so sweet and calming. We haven’t been since they renovated, and I thought a weekday would be a great time to visit, but, sadly, THE ENTIRE WORLD WAS ON SPRING BREAK. We waited 45 minutes to get in and, once we were in, it was like being in a pinball machine from hell — knocked two and fro with crying children everywhere. Look, I LOVE kids, but the way their shrieks echo in the wide open architecture of the Shedd Aquarium is deafening. So it wasn’t as relaxing as I had hoped.

We got a really good spot in front of the Caribbean Reef tank — the huge tank in the front of the Shedd where the diver goes in to feed the fish. Other than the Belugas, it’s my favorite part of the experience.

Well, the penguin and the dolphin aren’t in the reef tank. That sting ray all but attacked me through the glass! It freaked me out! But I got a reeeeeeal good closeup of him.

I love the architecture of the Shedd — everything has sea life integrated.

I love the Shedd.

I’m listening to The Happiness Project right now. It’s really good. At one point in her “experimenting” with methods of becoming more happy, she takes up a gratitude journal. I work at a place that has a lot, lot, lot of sad stories and infuriating things going on. It can be really easy to get caught up in the negative vibe. I floated the idea of gratitude journals to my husband tonight and he flatly refused to participate. Why? “Because it sounds like something I would make fun of, not do.” But then he surprised me by whipping out an anecdote from work that I know I wouldn’t have heard if we hadn’t been talking about the journals. So now I’m going to make him do it every night.

I’m grateful that I have a husband who is willing to participate in cheesy-yet-inspiring exercises of happiness.

Leilani YAY Happy Birthday! Mine was on a Monday too this year, sadly I didn’t take off work though. That cake is amazing, he put a lot of effort into redoing those letters, aw. 🙂

The Shedd is great but I understand the mobs of children experience… never go on the free day like I did my first time there. The best experience I’ve had was when my beau and I went to a private night event sponsored by Yelp where there was gourmet food, free drinks & the adults had full fun of the space!
