From August to Thanksgiving last year, I was slavishly dedicated to my fitness regime: I was walking almost 4 miles five or six days a week and then, in September, added Jillian Michaels’ 30-Day Shred to the mix. I was losing one to two pounds a week without altering my diet in any radical way — although, once I got into the fitness routine, I really had more impetus to eat better, for the most part. Right around Thanksgiving I got sick with something that stuck around for about two weeks, then it was the holiday season, then it was dark and cold for a very long time, so, long story short, I haven’t exercised since Thanksgiving! And there have been many, many, many pies in between then and now. The weather is finally starting to take a turn for the better around here — yesterday, it was in the sixties! It was heavenly. So I am revving the program back up. I’m starting with three days a week, then four, then five, then I’ll start the blankety-blank Jillian Michaels’ CD again.
SO: Guess how I motivated myself this week? The Brown Elephant on Clark is on my walking route, so I promised myself that I could stop at the thrift store on the way home. Here’s what that style of motivation has cost me so far.
“Lara,” you’re probably saying, “are you expecting an army to which you will serve brandy and orange juice?” I think I bought these as a way to put off walking back home. The longer I shop and the more that I buy, the more time I put in between myself and the sidewalk! They were priced really inexpensively and I wanted a set of glasses to practice glass etching on. Now I’m trying to come up with either the perfect design or the perfect words to etch on them.
Here’s how I justify it: one, it got me on my walk and two, I walked two miles carrying two bags that weighed at least five pounds each.
Since I’ve now been on three walks, there’s more I’ll show you later.
It’s still less expensive than a gym membership, right?
