My little chickie.

Once upon a time, there was a chickie cookie jar that lived on the top of my refrigerator. I found him at a yard sale; he cost $10, which is a lot for me to spend at a yard sale. But he was so cute. So I bought him, and brought him home with me. I don’t have a lot of counter space, so I perched him on top of the fridge. Are there things in your house that, every time you look at them, make you smile, and feel happy, and thank your lucky stars that you went ahead and bought it? That’s how I felt every time I looked at my little chickie. And then…DISASTER. During a party, a chain of events that started with me pushing chickie to the front of the refrigerator in order to open the liquor cabinet behind him and ended with me opening the freezer door without pushing chickie back conspired to END CHICKIE’S LIFE. In total seriousness, I can’t remember breaking something that upset me as badly as breaking this cookie jar did. His head shattered in just enough pieces to make it impossible to glue back together. He sat on the cabinet for about a week, in pieces, until I sobbed to my husband, “Put him away somewhere! I can’t look at him!” As he started to the trashcan with the pieces I shrieked “NOOOOOOOOO! You can’t throw him away!” Rolling his eyes, he ended up putting the cookie jar in the closet where I didn’t have to look at him.

Then, on Christmas, I opened one of my presents…

A NEW CHICKIE! Look at his adorable, happy face! I don’t know how he did it, but my husband found another cookie jar, just like the first, on eBay. I can’t imagine the search process — he didn’t know to search on “American Bisque,” so I imagine it took him quite a while, and I’m afraid he paid way more than he should have…but it’s one of the sweetest presents he’s ever given me. Every time I see him on the refrigerator, I smile. And nudge him a little more towards the back side of the fridge.
