Wisconsin Treasures, Part 2.

wi cargo framedThe thrift stores in the Dells were a bust. We even went to two in neighboring Baraboo, but they were pretty bad as well. You wouldn’t know it by looking at the photo above, would you? That’s a photo of my car without any luggage in it. That’s because Madison proved to be more interesting: I found a few things at the Hospice Care Thrift Store (122 Junction), which had a nice selection of older stuff for really good prices. Next we went to the biggest St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store at 1309 Williamson. This store is huge, and for the most part, the prices are pretty good — especially for their furniture. That’s where I got the majority of what’s taking up the cargo space in the photo above.

Their furniture prices were pretty low already, but they were having a 30% off sale on Friday, so I got all of the above for just above $30. The little child’s table set won me over with its chunky little legs. I’m going to paint it and then use some retro-reproduction oil cloth that I saw at Evanston’s Vogue Fabrics for the seats. I’m dreading painting it, though, because I know those legs are going to be a pain to get a smooth finish on. I know some people use spray paint but I’ve never had any luck with it — by the time I’m finished, everything’s all drippy and it gets a real serial-killer vibe. The mirror is a little too faux early-American gun cabinet in its current state but I’m planning on changing the hardware, painting it, and pairing it with a little dresser that needs a little more oomph.

So much painting to do, right when it’s getting so cold! Now I need a workshop. Like Santa’s elves.

janie hightower I want the little table and chairs in my house! No, really, there would need to be a baby here full time to warrant that, but I just love that set. Wish I could be an elf, I’d come up there and paint them for you.

Lara Jo Well, if you want to paint them, you can have them! That’s how much I’m dreading painting this set.
